Watching a game of football on Boxing Day is a British tradition. As big fans of football and sport in general we were delighted when Keil won 2 tickets to the Boxing Day game at Anfield where we watched Liverpool versus Leicester City. Keil entered a competition through Vitality insurance who are partners of Liverpool Football Club. We had a fantastic time!
We arrived at Anfield with plenty of time before the game, we took a few photos outside the kop end including the statue of the great Liverpool manager Bill Shankley. He is a man of Liverpool legend and known as the person who has helped to shape Liverpool into the club it is today.
We are Liverpool fans and although we try to be a little bit impartial on our website we love the reds! We headed to the Main Stand which is in the middle of a redevelopment. It will be great to see how the changes improve the stadium, it will create more seats to raise the capacity, leading to an even better atmosphere we would imagine. Our seats were inline with the goal but they weren't the comfiest, they were the original wooden seats and we understand these will be improved next season too.
Our view was direct to the goal at the Anfield Road end so we had a good view of the whole pitch. We watched some of the warm-ups and then local boxer Liam Smith who is the WBO Light-Middleweight Champion of the World came out and said a few words to the crowd, he is a lifelong red so admitted walking out onto the Anfield pitch is more nerve racking than his boxing matches.
Then it was time for the teams to enter and the famous You'll Never Walk Alone was played and sung out throughout the stadium. It is certainly impressive to be there and experience it firsthand. Keil shared a video on his Instagram here.
We then had kickoff! Leicester City were top of the league at Christmas having only lost once all season, they had also scored in every game so we expected it to be a tough game. However it wasn't. Liverpool dominated the game and had some good chances to score. We have to say we were disappointed with Leicester and if they play like that in future we can't see them winning the league - They must have been on an off day! In the second half Benteke scored in front of the Kop to put Liverpool in the lead, in the final minutes he had an incredible chance to score and seal the win as he raced through on an empty goal with Leicester's goalkeeper stranded upfield after a desperate attempt to help his team get a late equaliser, inexplicably he missed! Luckily for him his miss counted for nothing as the final whistle blew seconds later to rapturous cheers from the home faithful.
The game finished 1-0 to Liverpool and we thoroughly enjoyed the game, it's always better when your team wins. On our last trip to Anfield 5 years ago, also over the Chritmas period, the game and atmosphere was forgettable. Liverpool lost 1-0 to Wolves and Roy Hodgson got sacked afterwards so the legendary Anfield atmosphere was a bit flat. This year it was much better and a great day was had.
We clapped the teams off and made our way out of the stadium. Fortunatly we saw a bus heading for the city centre so we hopped on and headed into Liverpool to continue the Boxing Day celebrations!
How was your Boxing Day? We'd love to know what you did.
