We recently spent a week in Las Vegas, where we went to the fitness expo Olympia, launched our latest NFL inspired collection, visited the cycling conference, Interbike, and spent an evening watching the boxing at a closed-circuit viewing party at the MGM Grand to see the big fight – Canelo v Golovkin. It was a fantastic week of sport and fitness!
After spending some time exploring Olympia 2017, we jumped on the monorail from the Conference Centre to the MGM Grand. This is a hotel we’ve stayed in before so we know our way around, we love the happy hour at Emeril’s so we had a quick stop off to refuel with their appetisers and cocktails.
Then it was time to go to the party. Las Vegas was buzzing with one of the biggest fights of the year, Canelo v Golovkin taking place at the brand new T-Mobile arena. It was also Mexican Independence Day on Saturday (the day of the fight) so Vegas was full of Mexicans all looking forward to the main event!
We decided to watch the boxing at a viewing party taking place in the Marquee Ballroom, we purchased our tickets on Ticketmaster so we were all set. The ballroom held about 3000 people and we believe it was sold out.
On arrival, the first fight of the night which was being shown on the telecast was just beginning. There were plenty of huge screens, lots of seats and bars around the edges – Which we never queued for.
For the first few fights, the room was slowly getting busier as fight fans from around the world made their way to the screening. Every fight had a Mexican fighter in it so there was still a decent atmosphere from the very beginning. There was a feeling of anticipation as time ticked closer to the main events ring walk. It got busier and busier and was packed by the time GGG headed to the ring.
Although we thought most people would be supporting Canelo, there were plenty of Triple G fans in the house too, this made for plenty of cheers and a few boos as the two fighters made their way into the ring. The fight had it all over 12 absorbing rounds. We thoroughly enjoyed it and believed like everyone else in the room that Golvkin had won.
So it was a huge surprise when the judge’s scorecards revealed the fight was a draw! Most of the Mexican fans supporting Canelo couldn’t believe it either. This was the only negative of the night as the room went silent and nobody was happy on the way out of the MGM.
It was a great experience to be able to watch the boxing with another 3000 fans and experience the ups and downs of the fight. Due to the big screens and the atmosphere, we felt like we were ringside!
