Last Friday we went for a fun day at Thirsk races. Although we've been to the races many times we'd never visited Thirsk racecourse before so it was a new adventure!
It's easy to get to Thirsk from Leeds on the train, we then hopped on the free shuttlebus which took us to the racecourse. It's only around 5 minutes from the station. We went into the family enclosure and took in our own little picnic, we filled our basket with some snacks to keep us away from all the fast food on offer, we also enjoyed a glass or two of wine throughout the day.
We don't know much about racing so we bought a newspaper to explain the form and marked out the horses we were going to back in each race. We didn't agree on them all so on some races we had a horse each to hopefully win or place! The weather was ok but like most outdoor events it would have been even better if the sun had been shining! Keil also made friends with the mascot although he was a little shy at first.
In 5 out of the 6 races we had a place in each so we managed to break even and win as much as we had bet which is not too bad! In the final race we had marked off the horse that won but we didn't put money on it as it said it needed rain to be at its best! (what do the experts know?) This was a big mistake and a lesson learned, always trust your own instincts!
Soon the day at the races was over and we left in good spirits. It's always nice to get a few winners but on this occasion it wasn't to be. We always have a fun time when we go out for the day and this was another nice day which we really enjoyed. We will happily go back to Thirsk races again in the future.
Do you go to the races? Any tips?!
