After losing an incredible amount of weight during his weightloss journey. Keil is sharing some of the lessons he learnt along the way.
I wanted to share some of the lessons I learned on my journey from fat to fit, where I lost over 5 stone in weight, so you don't make the same mistakes that I did! I would have loved some help and advice when I made the decision to get fit and healthy, someone sharing their knowledge and tips can be a great help and encouragement to anyone who makes the decision to effect a positive change in their life. I sincerely hope my advice can help someone out there believe that they can achieve anything they desire.
It all starts with you! You have to make the decision to get fit, it is your choice and your choice alone, if you don't take it seriously and commit to making a change long term then I'm sorry to say that you will fail, its as simple as that! Your why has to be big enough to fuel your fire, it has to be the one thing that ignites the fire deep inside of you that will burn bright. You must believe you can achieve your goals, as the old saying goes ‘whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you're right” The reason your why needs to be bigger than your excuses is because there will be times on your journey that you want to give up! You will get disheartened, frustrated, annoyed, emotional, angry and sad. It’s during these times that your resolve will be tested, its decision time…
Are you going to fight, or are you going to quit? When your why is big enough you will stay the course, fight through the tough times and come through the other side. You will be a better person for the experiences you endure and it’s a wicked feeling that you can all experience.
Now you have decided to be a fighter I'm going to give you a few tips to help you make your journey a little less painful, so here we go:
Please don't pay too much attention to the numbers on your weighing scales, I would recommend keeping them and weighing yourself occasionally but they can be your own worst enemy at times, they can kill you psychologically so my advice is to get yourself a tape measure and a camera. Take pictures on a monthly basis and measure your important areas such as waist, hips, chest etc either weekly or fortnightly. These tools will give you a genuine picture of the positive changes your body is undertaking. You will have bad weeks, trust me I've had plenty, but the key to staying the course is to see it as a challenge! Say to yourself that you will win the next one, chalk it up and move on with focus and intent. Your mind is incredibly powerful so treat it well, make sure your self talk (the little voice in your head) is always positive.
Your body is a super smart machine! Too smart for its own good sometimes and it loves ROUTINE! If you do the same exercises and workouts all the time your body will get used to what you are doing and offer plenty of resistance to you achieving your goals, you need to shock your body and consistently change up your workouts to keep your internal mechanisms evolving, if your body doesn't know whats around the corner it is razor sharp and ready to do whatever it needs to achieve the results you desire, trust me on this one guys, I have got stuck and plateaued more times than I can remember and a subtle change to my training/nutrition has got me over the hump every time.
For some reason people believe that to loose weight you just need to eat less, NO, NO, NO! Of course if you are currently consuming way too many calories then you need to cut down and get smarter with your food choices but please don't starve yourself. Remember that I said your body is very clever? Well here is another prime example of just how evolved we are, if you start to consume too little in the way of calories your metabolism will slow down sending your body into starvation mode, it will wonder where its energy supply has gone, leading to it clinging on to literally every calorie it gets, this in turn can slow down and even stop your weight loss. Look to eat a good balanced diet that gives your body the nutrition it needs, add in some exercise and your body will start to get the energy needed to perform from your stored fat cells, Hooray!
So there we have it, a few of the lessons I learned the hard way. Take this advice on board, learn from my mistakes and you will start your journey strong.
Here’s to a happier, healthier you!
