One great thing about living in Yorkshire is all the great sport we have on our doorstep! From the Tour de Yorkshire which was here last month, to lots of football teams, rugby teams and our favourite cricket team! Last weekend we spent almost all of it watching two of our favourites, an evening of cricket and an afternoon of rugby league.
On Friday the weekend kicked off with a T20 blast match at Yorkshire’s County Cricket ground in Headlingley where Yorkshire were playing the ‘old enemy’ Lancashire Lightning. The sun was shining and it was a perfect afternoon/evening for cricket. When we arrived in the ground there was filming of sky’s TV show A League of their Own, which was a nice surprise! We saw Jamie Redknapp, Jack Whitehall and Amir Khan having a go with the bat, the bowling came courtesy of Freddie Flintoff and Mathew Hoggard, it was an entertaining 15 minutes so make sure you look out for this on TV.
The game began at 6.30pm and Yorkshire batted first. It was great to see the Aussie Glen Maxwell hitting the ball around the ground to begin with, he even hit the first ball of the match for 6, he’s not called the Big Show for nothing! As always there was a really friendly and fun atmosphere, we were sat in the western terrace which is always the ‘fun’ place be. Throughout there was the usual ‘snake’, where people make their plastic drink glasses into a snake and pass it around the crowd! There was cheering as a girl attempted to eat her hot-dog and lots of applause and cheers for the game! Yorkshire set a competitive score of 185. So we were set for a thrilling end to the evening.
Lancashire then went up to bat and we have to say Yorkshire’s bowling let them down a bit! It went down to the last ball of the game where Lancs needed 1 run to win – They got it after Yorkshire missed the run out opportunity!
Although we were disappointed with the result, Yorkshire fans never want to lose to Lancashire – It was still a fantastic evening of cricket, those are the games you want to see!
On Saturday we didn’t watch any live sport but we did enjoy watching the Champions League final on TV! Where Barcelona of Spain beat Juventus of Italy 3-1.
Sunday it was time to get back outside, this time we headed to Odsal to watch Bradford Bulls playing Doncaster in the Kingstone Press Championship. It was another sunny afternoon and as we shared in our post about Danny Jones we love to watch rugby league. The first half was quite competitive with the Bulls leading 18-6 at the interval. In the second half though Bradford dominated, scoring almost every time they got the ball, the game ended 72-6! Although it was good for Bulls to win and improve their points difference as they are aiming to win the league, such a one-sided game is never quite as exciting from a spectators point of view!
Again the sun was shining and Odsal in the sunshine is great (we’ve spent too many games shivering in the cold there). It was good to be back watching rugby and it was a fun way to spend the afternoon.
We had a fab weekend watching sport and wish every weekend was like this one!
